When you first hear the term internet addiction, you may smile and think this new term is a joke. Okay, so maybe people do waste a lot of time on the internet. But how can that be such a bad thing?

Yet, internet addiction can be a serious problem. Like many addictions, it is a compulsive disorder. First, take the word addiction itself. Addiction means that you are dependent on something, it is taking up a lot of your time. Now think about the time one can waste on the internet. Okay, so an hour here and there isn't a bad thing. But if a person is addicted to the internet they will be online longer than just an hour and it won't just be an event that happens occasionally, being online is something they do daily for hours on end. This addiction can lead to time away from family and friends. It can even led to time that should be spent at work.

Internet addiction can be further explained into subcategories, too. One may not just be addicted to the internet. One can get addicted to certain activities that perform while on the internet such as: online auctions, online chat rooms, online surfing, online gaming, and this addiction can even led to more serious online problems such as online gambling and online cybersex.

How do you know if you have a problem? You should start by looking at your internet habits. Then ask yourself such questions as: How often are you online? Does being online ever interfere with your work or home duties and if so how often does it? How often do you check your email? Do people in your home complain about how often you are online? Do you continue to search out new online friends? When you are not online do you anticipate when you can go back online? Do you get annoyed when someone interrupts you while you are online? Do you loose sleep because you are online late at night? Do you ever hide the length of time you were online?

The answer to the above questions can indicate that you have a problem. If you think you do, what should you do? Like with any other health problem, you may want to consider counseling. If you can't afford counseling, you may want to check out some websites that offers some help.

It may seem strange that there are websites that help with online addiction. Yet, if you think about it online websites may be the best place for online addiction sufferer to seek help. A great site is netaddiction.com. At this site, they further explain what online addiction is. They also have online self tests you can take, to see if you have a problem and to see just how deep your problem is. They also offer advice for more serious online problems such as online gambling and online cybersex activities. They even have chat rooms where recovering addicts and family members of recovering addicts can come together and share.

Should one avoid the internet for fear of getting addicted, no? The internet is a wonderful tool. You can learn a lot online. Plus, it is a great place to just relax and have fun. But moderation is the key in any activity, including the internet.

Parents should also monitor their children to make sure that they are not becoming addicted to the internet. Some children, especially teenagers, have problems building friendships and relationships. You don't want your child's only friendships to be on the internet.

The internet and your online friends should not take the place of real life and real life people. If you remember that one sentence, you will continue to enjoy the internet in a healthy way.

Yahoo! Versus Google - Does Yahoo! Stand a Chance at Winning?

WHAT WAS TERRY SEMEL THINKING?

One of the last desperate gasps of corporate manuvering that ex-CEO of Yahoo! Terry Semel did, was to offer a full quarter of Yahoo! stock to News Corp. in exchange for the ownership of MySpace.com that News Corp. had forked out over $580 million for two years ago. Needless to say, that lame duck deal never saw the light of day, as Semel has since left Yahoo! for greener pastures in the internet world, leaving the far superior-thinking Jerry Yang at the helm of Yahoo! for the immediate future.

Semel's horrible management of Yahoo! over the past five years was a combination of misinformed business decisions concerning the future of the internet itself, and the lack of Semel's ability to cut through the corporate bureaucracy that has allowed Google to leap past Yahoo! to become the #1 search engine that it currently is today. Everyone in Silicon valley realized that Semel had to leave Yahoo! if the company ever wanted to gain back the ground that Semel had lost to Google over his disastrous reign for the past few years, so Semel's resignation came as no real shock to anyone.

THE FOUNDER IS BACK IN CHARGE

Major tech companies always need their CEO's to be people who have a strong background in technical issues, and Yang is certainly no exception. As one of the major founders of Yahoo! since its inception, Yang should be able to come up with a new company strategy that will put on emphasis on attaining new technological advantages over Google that will allow Yahoo! to step up the competition.

A lot of key personnel in Yahoo's ranks had left the company because they hated the fact that Semel was not an internet guy at all, and he had no real interest in running Yahoo's day-to-day business. He was seen as a figurehead for a once cutting-edge tech company that had lost any focus on what it takes to keep up with a behemoth like Google has turned into.

RUMORS OF A BUY-OUT RUN RAMPANT

The performance gap between Yahoo! and Google really needs to be closed very quickly if Yang is to succeed at his new job, and a huge buy-out from another tech company might just have to take place for that gap to be closed. Microsoft and Comcast both have been rumored to be seeking out exactly how much Yahoo! would be worth to them, while other insiders believe that Yahoo! fares a better chance at financial gains if they just align themselves with Google and outsource their search engine to Google for a huge cut of the ad revenue that would be generated on Google's much more popular pages.

THINGS COULD NOT LOOK WORSE FOR YAHOO!

Google's main searches bring back 40 percent more ad revenue than Yahoo! does, and the February release of "Panama", the new Yahoo! ad system that was supposed to generate a more streamlined approach to help increase Yahoo's advertising revenue did absolutely nothing for them. Yahoo's banner advertising which was once their pride and joy could drop their second-quarter results far below the midpoint of the predictions that Yahoo! had forcasted only a few months ago.

Yahoo! even had a chance to buy the extremely popular social bookmarking site Facebook, at a price of $1 billion last year, but did not complete the deal because of Terry Semel having to re-think the deal. Now, with Facebook's overwhelming new popularity, that decision could potentially cost Yahoo! millions of dollars in lost revenue over the next five years.

Nobody wants to see Google take over the entire search engine ad revenue market all by themselves. Yahoo! should look at every possible strategy so they can somehow come up out on top, and get out of their own way so that true success will come back to their search engine business which will allow them to give Google the much needed competition they need so that this search engine monopoly can finally end.

No one's going to mistake this for a fashion phone, but we're thinking that's just fine with Sonim, the company well-known for its ultra-rugged XP3 that's just passed a new XP2 model through the FCC's barrage of testing. Dubbed "Spirit," the XP2 appears to be Sonim's first phone with 3G on board -- though the tiny display will probably make it useful more for tethering than anything else -- and that insane-looking octagonal shell has us believing that they're going to be able to make some truly wild claims about its survivability. UMTS while spot-welding the phone in 30 feet of water? Probably not, but if any phone could do it, we suspect it'd be this bad boy. No word on pricing, availability, or even an announcement, but we'll keep you updated.

Sonim's XP2 strong-arms its way through the FCC originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Fri, 02 Oct 2009 23:52:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Fairpoint CEO Talks Possible Bankruptcy - Solving the 'financial piece of this company' to be 'interesting'

Earlier this month we noted how Fairpoint Communications would miss most Tmnet Streamyx Bill Service their New England broadband expansion goals as the carrier continues to deal with fleeing customers Adsl Autoconnect a high debt load. Over the weekend Fairpoint CEO David Hauser talked with the New Hampshire Union Leader. Hauser puts on a relaxed face when asked watch movies on the internet the company's NYSE delisting, whether Fairpoint overpaid for the New England networks, and how a Internal Dsl Modem possible bankruptcy could impact the company:

"There's a whole series of events that caused the last six months to be very difficult for FairPoint. The vast majority of those events, we're past (them) at this point," he said. "Now our next one is we have to solve the financial piece of this company, and that's going to be very interesting, but I'm highly confident of where we'll end up with that," Hauser said. "We will restructure the debt broadband radio one of two ways ... either in (bankruptcy) court or out of court. If you're looking into the future, it doesn't matter which way you got there. You'll come pretty close to the same place either way."
One thing that's in Hauser's favor? The same weak-kneed regulators who approved the deal in the first place amid warnings from analysts, unions and consumer advocates continue to allow the company to move forward without a transparent, publicly verifiable improvement plan.

The Snickers bar was created by the Mars family corporation in 1930 with the name itself coming from one of their favorite horses. The Snickers candy bar is comprised of peanuts, nougat, caramel, and milk chocolate. The original 2.07 oz (58.7 g) Snickers bar has 280 calories and 130 calories from fat. The twin pack, king size version has 220 calories per bar (47 g) with 100 calories from fat per serving.

Mars Inc. is the largest confectionery company in the world and was started in the early 1900's by Frank C. Mars and his wife Ethyl Mars. They originally sold the Snickers bar in England and Ireland but named it the "Marathon" bar. In 1990, Mars changed its name to Snickers and this name change moved the candy bar from ninth to third place in popularity.

The family also invented the Mars bar in 1936 with a European version that was slightly sweeter and missing the almonds. Until recently, the Mars bar was the most popular candy bar of the 20th century. In 2000, the Mars bar was renamed Snickers Almond and within 2 years, sales had plummeted, and Snickers took over as the most popular bar in the world, and the best selling candy bar in history.

In 2004, the king size version of the Snickers bar started to be phased out in England and was replaced by a twin bar pack. This twin pack was designed to comply with the Food and Drink Federation and its 2004 manifesto urging the food industry to reduce sugar, salt, and fat, provide clear food labels, and become more health conscious. The twin pack is the same weight as the king size version but is designed to be shared or saved.

This is a stark contrast to the deep fried chocolate bars that became popular in the early 2000's. These fried Snickers and Mars bars generally weighed in at over 850 calories per bar!

Mars Inc. products: Milky Way, Dove Chocolates, Twix, M&M's, 3 Musketeers, Skittles, Bounty, Kudos, Starburst, Marathon/Snickers, Mars Bar, Fling, Mars Delight, M-Azing, Minstrels, Combos, Revels, Spillers, Lockets, Galaxy, Flyte, Promite, Maltesers, Schmackos, Snickers Marathon Energy Bar, Pill Pockets, Seeds of Change, Winergy, Mars Planets, Tracker, Techni-Cal, Whiskas, Pedigree, Nutro, Cesar, Royal Canin, Sheba, Medi-Cal, Topic, Bounty Buckey Nutrition Celebrations, Greenies, Wisdom Panel MX Mixed Breed DNA Test, and Mars Fish Care.

Iphone Music Downloads - Three Ways To Get Them For Free

Buying iphone music can quickly blow our budgets. As a music lover I was finding the cost a real barrier to my passion for expanding my music library. So I did some research and found there are basically three ways we can get music for free (or nearly for free!)

1) Search the internet for sites that have free music. This can be a lot of fun because many of these sites provide musicians with a way to get "discovered" by us. So we can be among the first to find a new talent!

Sites like sounclick have a good selection of artists that provide free music. The music is provided under "creative commons license" - which just means that the musician is willing to let you download their music for free - and even, in some cases, let you remix or make other changes to it. One way to get a unique ring tone perhaps (how to do that is covered on my squidoo lens - the link to it is at the bottom of this article)

You will also need a good iPhone converter. I recommend you Broadband Internet Access to sites like download.com as they do guarantee that they have checked the software for spyware and viruses. They also often have free software of software you can try for free. There are iPhone converters reviewed there.

2) Hunt around the internet for sites (other than Apple) that sell iPhone music on a per song basis (these can be hard to find, but Napster is planning to provide music for iPhone child internet safety later this year, so keep checking them out).

Obviously, there is iTunes! But, at around $1 a song, it does not take long to have spent your budget (you DO have a budget right? - because it is real easy to overspend when you pay out only $1 at a time -believe me I have been there!) One of the problems with iTunes is the limits on sharing and even playing the music on other devices.

3) Use subscription sites where you pay a fee and then can download an almost infinite selection of music.

There are a range of sites that offer different subscription options. We recommend the pay-once-to-join option as this works out to be the cheapest membership option (and also works out cheaper than buying one piece of music at a time).

(Musicstation is not available for US users but is an example of a pay as you go membership site and at $6US (3UK pounds) a week the costs soon mount up and by the end of 12 months we are looking at 52x6= $322 (156UK pounds) - so don't be sucked in by the slick look of sites like this!)

If you download as much music as I do - I currently have a library of Voip Malaysia songs/instrumentals - then it does not take long before the subscription option becomes the best option. On subscription, downloading all these songs only cost 13cents each. And the more music is downloaded, the cheaper each one costs!

But, be warned - downloading iPhone music can be addictive!

Did you find this information useful? The author has identified the best sites to get free iPhone music downloads on the internet. He runs a website at http://www.squidoo.com/free-apple-iphone-music-downloads

Drogba earns four-game ban

The Internet is a terrestrial-based system, and satellite Internet technology utilizes an extraterrestrial-based system, i.e. satellite, to get connected to the Internet backbone. The need for the access through satellite is the lack of DSL and cable lines in remote areas and in mobile situations such as internet speed optimizer vessels.

Satellite Internet access works through a dish at the customers location, which sends radio frequencies from the computer to the satellite. The dish is usually of 1.2 m diameter. The customers location adsl broadband be equipped with a satellite modem to convert digital information into analog form. The customers location may be a single PC or networked workstations. This obviates the need for telephone lines.

At the other end, the satellite sends back the frequencies to the teleport at a ground station where a number of large aperture dishes are placed. From here, the data is sent to the network system, which consists of routers and optical cables that connect to the Internet backbone. As the Internet backbone is shared by many service providers, the bandwidth availability is restricted by the terrestrial Internet infrastructure.

At the users location, the access is determined by the level of service required, whether it is one-way or two-way satellite service. One-way service may require a regular dial up service. A user may need to have a minimum of Windows- or Mac-supported PC with a networking capability. Other requirements include Ethernet port. Other than hardware requirements, software programming to manage interfaces is required.

Broadband access through satellite is a costly alternative to cable modems and DSL. The access is limited by the costly installations and the weather conditions. Besides, the uplink speed is limited by the dial-up speed just like dial-up Internet. The long-haul distance between the dish and satellite results in delay of the access.

Satellite Internet provides detailed information on Satellite Internet, Satellite Internet Services, Satellite Internet Access, Satellite Internet Providers and more. Satellite Internet is affiliated with High Speed Internet Services.
